The other night, a friend and I were sitting on the Xbox Dashboard in party chat talking about what games we wanted to play. We were in the mood for something that did not require heavy investment from us. While the usual games required updates, we were stuck with a very small number of options.
So, I went over to the Free Games tab on my Xbox and saw a small game called Super Animal Royale. It was under a Gig, so I suggested to my friend we should try it seeing as we had nothing better to play.
Well…my entire friend group is hooked now.
Critters with Guns
I’m not sure if this game is a meme or being serious but it’s a Battle Royale with angry-looking animals as characters. These animals can use guns and explosives as weapons, including a ‘bow and sparrow’ which literally shoots sparrows instead of arrows.
The game is played through an isometric view on a cartoonish 2D layout. It took a lot of getting used to at first, but it’s a lot of fun once you figure things out. There’s just something about seeing an angry fox wrap his broken bulletproof vest with duct tape to fix it or throw a skunk bomb as a gas grenade.
Progression
Players earn DNA points to unlock new animals and different variants of them. Players also earn tokens to use in the shop while there is also a battlepass, appropriately named an Animal Pass. These give cosmetics, which make our little animals look even angrier and more gangster than they already are.
Animal Royale is a fun little game that took me by surprise. If you’re in the mood for something ridiculous, I suggest giving it a go!
