WWE 2K20 Gets New Developer

It’s been reported that Yuke’s won’t be developing WWE2K20.

The WWE games have become synonymous with one developer over the years. Yuke’s has been developing WWE games since 1999 and many thought they would be behind the wheel of this year’s WWE 2K20 but that doesn’t seem to be the case. 2K is looking to make some major changes to the long-running franchise, and that means turning over development to Visual Concepts. While Visual Concepts have been working with Yuke’s on the franchise since WWE 2K14, it seems they have now been given full control over the franchise.

2K explained the departure of the developer to VGC, stating, “WWE 2K20 will be developed by Visual Concepts. We’ve seen the Visual Concepts team display incredible passion, talent and commitment to the future of the series. We thank Yuke’s for their years of partnership and are excited to see what the Visual Concepts team brings to the franchise moving forward.”

Visual Concepts also work on the NBA 2K series and have turned it into a critically-acclaimed franchise. As for the WWE series, the developer handled animation, writing, and audio for the game, while Yuke’s handled the art, tech and design of the game.

Yuke’s confirmed that they aren’t working on the game but have said that they will continue to provide support 2K with regards to the game engine. This is a big change since Yuke’s been working wrestling games since the 90s. The developer delivered annual WWE games from 2000 to 2012 under publisher THQ. When THQ went bankrupt, many of its franchises were picked up by other publishers, with 2K Sports’ parent company Take-Two Interactive opting on obtaining the WWE license, after which they rebranded the series as WWE 2K.

Since being produced by 2K Sports, the series has introduced premium downloadable content and a story-based career mode similar to NBA 2K’s career mode. Some of the franchise’s most popular features have also been removed or heavily monetized. Many fans have expressed their disdain with the changes that 2K have made to the franchise.

It remains to be seen whether the change will prove to be good for the series. If it isn’t, Yuke’s are rumored to be working a new wrestling game too. WWE 2K20 launches on 22 October for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
