Fans have been waiting for the release of MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries for quite a while. The game is a first-person, simulator-style combat game set in the universe of Battletech. It was originally set to release in 2018 but was then delayed to due to Piranha Games saying they needed more time. Well, it seems to have been delayed once again, and has changed storefronts as well. The game will now arrive in December and will be an Epic Games Store exclusive.
According to the game’s website, it will now release on 10 December and will be exclusively available on the Epic Games Store for a year. The post reads: “Our partnership with the Epic Games Store allows us the opportunity to make sure MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries meets our internal goal of creating the best MechWarrior game possible.” It seems that this was purely a business decision as they either want to save money or make more by being exclusive to the Epic Games Store.
Piranha Games also addressed fans who might want refunds for the game due to the exclusivity deal. “Fans looking to obtain refunds from their pre-order of any tier are able to do so by September 1st. Pre-order refunds of any tier will be refunded in full. Additionally, those seeking refunds will be able to keep all bonus MechWarrior Online content from the Standard, Collector and Ultimate Editions of the pre-order.”
It’s important to note that there will be consequences for refunding your pre-order. You will forfeit your access to the main game and won’t be able to participate in the upcoming closed beta.
This seems to be another instance in which Epic Games has chosen to approach the PC digital games market aggressively. This decision will surely upset fans, the same way Shenmue III’s exclusivity announcement upset fans.
