Borderlands 3 Will Not Support Cross-Play At Launch

Gearbox CEO confirms that Borderlands 3 won’t have cross-play at launch.

The gun crazy RPG Borderlands 3 is less than two months away from being released. However, there was recently some confusion about the game created in an event announcement. On 16 July, Borderlands 3 will have an event called the Celebration of Togetherness. Many thought the event was going to reveal that the game will have cross-play as the name of the event suggests the idea of bringing people together. Well, according to Gearbox’s CEO Randy Pitchford, this is not the case.

Pitchford recently took to Twitter to shoot down the idea that the game will have cross-play. He stated that the Celebration of Togetherness will have nothing to do with cross-play. Though he did say that they “are committed to supporting cross-play for Borderlands 3 with our partners as soon practicable after launch.” This means that there is hope that the game will have cross-play sometime in the future. However, this all does bring up the question: what exactly is the Celebration of Togetherness about?

Some have speculated that some big changes could be coming to the game’s multiplayer mode. It could also mean that the title may include a cross-save feature, which brings the term of togetherness full circle.

Cross-play has become a huge focus for many gamers as they don’t want to feel alienated by what console they choose to play on. Also, Gearbox has already shown that it will support a game long after it has been released. The developer released new Borderlands 2 DLC at E3 2019, which was a shock as the game was released seven years ago. The DLC is meant to help tie Borderlands 2 to the events of Borderlands 3.

With Borderlands 3’s release right around the corner, many can’t wait to get their hands on it. It seems that the title will be bigger than previous entries in the series and will provide players with another adventure with their friends. Borderlands 3 will launch on 13 September for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
