During the Google Stadia presentation, THQ Nordic surprised everyone by announcing a new Darksiders game, despite providing no release date. The game, called Darksiders Genesis, will be a spin-off from the main series. It will be taking the series in a new direction and seems to be a Diablo-style action role-playing game. Players will be hacking and slashing their way through different dungeons and monsters, all while collecting loot along their journey.
THQ Nordic has said that the game will feature intense combat, exploration, puzzle-solving, epic boss battles and serpent holes from heaven to hell. The game will be played from a top-down perspective, marking a first for the series. Players will be fighting alongside War, who is the main protagonist from the original Darksiders. The game is being developed by Airship Syndicate, whose previous credits include Battle Chasers: Nightwar.
The first Darksiders game was released all the way back in 2010, when Vigil Games released it under THQ. It featured the horseman War mistakenly coming to Earth and causing destruction. It was followed by a sequel Darksiders 2, where players followed the horseman Death who is trying to save his brother, War. The third entry Darksiders 3 was developed by Gunfire Games and was released by THQ Nordic in 2018, and followed the horseman Fury.
Darksiders Genesis is a fresh take on the Darksiders formula but is that direction the right one? It does show that THQ Nordic is willing to take risks with their franchises. Darksiders Genesis is just one of three games the publisher recently announced, alongside a remake of Destroy All Humans! and SpongeBob: Battle for Bikini Bottom. Here’s hoping that THQ Nordic will finally get the four horseman game they have been trying to build for the last decade.
