With the recently released Detective Pikachu breaking the curse of bad video game movie adaptions, it seems that the video game industry is ready to re-enter the movie and TV industry. Quite a few video game publishers have taken notice. It seems that Square Enix is one such publisher as a Just Cause film is now in the works. If recent reports are to be believed, the upcoming adaption will be led by Derek Kolstad of John Wick game.
With the John Wick franchise behind Kolstad’s name, there is high hopes for the film, which many hope will be filled with a gripping story and unique set pieces. The movie will be produced by Robert Kulzer of Constantin Films and Adrian Askarieh of Prime Universe Films. Both have worked on video game films in the past. Kulzer previously helped produce the Resident Evil film franchise and Askarieh helped produced the Hitman films. Though these films are divisive in the video game industry, there is no denying that they are an experienced team.
With this team, they may be able to adapt the over-the-top action the video game franchise is famous for. Though Just Cause has received the live action treatment before in the form of trailers for the game, these can’t be compared to a full-length big budget film.
Just Cause isn’t the only video game title to receive an adaption in recent years. A Halo TV show has being green-lit by Showtime and Netflix’s upcoming The Witcher series will be arriving sometime this year. These are highly-anticipated adaptations, but only time will tell how they will fare. If they all turn out well, it could be a renaissance of video game adaptions.
The announcement comes a day after Sony revealed their new PlayStation Production, which aims to produce films based on PlayStation’s most popular video game franchises. With so many new projects in the works, it seems that video game culture will be part of every media form for awhile.
