Red Dead Redemption 2 is the massive hit developed and published by Rockstar Games, the creators of one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time – Grand Theft Auto. Released October 26th, 2018, the compelling narrative of this action-adventure game revolves around Arthur Morgan, a member of a notorious gang, and his relationships with his and other rival gangs in a fictional 1899 American Old West setting. At launch, Red Dead Redemption 2 had the “2nd biggest launch in entertainment history,” generating over $725 million (USD) in its opening week! (The 1st biggest launch is a record set and held by Grand Theft Auto V.) It garnered rave reviews becoming one of the best-reviewed video games of all-time, and has won several awards.
In completely usual fashion, the best selling, phenomenal game has befallen a bug. However, what’s odd and remarkable about this online bug is it’s like nothing the gaming world has ever seen before (save one similar glitch that the game also suffered to a much lower scale). Apparently, the glitch is more prevalent on the PS4 and also affects hardware performance.
Red Dead Redemption Online had been in open beta since its release, and the team behind the game was regularly churning out updates with patches and content until earlier this month. The online component of the game has been out of beta for a few days following a huge update, and now, this bug has infiltrated the game – for a specific few.
As per speculation, the bug is the result of another bug which some players have been exploiting: players would catch a large fish and, using a method involving a horse, would duplicate the fish into their respective inventories. This is the one-of-a-kind bug: players, assumably those that have been exploiting the fish-cloning bug, have been sighting heaps and scapes of dead and scorched horses in parts of the Red Dead Redemption 2 map, and there are barely any NPCs (non-playable characters) in towns on the map. It’s hard to say just how many players are affected by the bug because not all players have the issue, but those whose game has been afflicted are claiming that the bug has rendered the game ‘unplayable.’ Here is an in-depth article on the bug.
Rockstar Games has confirmed that they have resolved the issue.
